  2.                CENTRAL POINT ANTI-VIRUS SIGNATURE UPDATE

  4. *Signature File Update Information for DOS Versions other than Version 1.0*
  5.  
  6. The self-extracting archive file named DOSSIG.EXE is for users of Central
  7. Point Anti-Virus Version 1.1 and all future versions.  It contains an update 
  8. file that includes additional virus signatures as of July 30, 1992.
  9.   
  10. This update works with Central Point Anti-Virus Version 1.1 or later. 
  11.  
  12. To update your version of Central Point Anti-Virus, follow these steps:
  13.  
  14. 1. If you are on CompuServe or the Central Point BBS, download the 
  15.    self-extracting archive file as DOSSIG.EXE to a temporary directory
  16.    on your hard drive.
  17.  
  18.    If you have the Central Point Anti-Virus Signature Disk, copy the
  19.    self-extracting archive file DOSSIG.EXE to a temporary directory on 
  20.    your hard drive.

  22. 2. Run DOSSIG.EXE to extract the update signature file, VIRSIGS.CPS, and 
  23.    the Read Me file, DOSSIG.TXT, which contains this file and an updated 
  24.    list of virus signatures included in the VIRSIGS.CPS file.

  26. 3. Copy the VIRSIGS.CPS file to the directory on your hard drive containing 
  27.    the Central Point Anti-Virus files.
  28.  
  29. 4. Reboot your computer to invoke the new signatures when you run VSAFE.
  30.  
  31. 5. Run the Central Point Anti-Virus program.  
  32.  
  33. The virus list is updated automatically when you run the program.
  34.  
  35. There are some virus signatures included in the VIRSIGS.CPS file that have
  36. the same name as viruses already detected by your version of Central Point 
  37. Anti-Virus.  As new variants of viruses are found, we may add the 
  38. variant signature to the signature file to increase the virus detection
  39. capability.  Since the name of the variant is, in most cases, the same as 
  40. the original virus name, it will show up in the virus list only once and 
  41. will not be added to the total virus count.

  45. To update PC Tools VDEFEND Version 7.1, follow these steps:
  46.  
  47. 1. If you are on CompuServe or the Central Point BBS, download the 
  48.    self-extracting archive file as DOSSIG.EXE to a temporary directory

  51.    If you have the Central Point Anti-Virus Signature Disk, copy the
  52.    self-extracting archive file DOSSIG.EXE to a temporary directory on 
  53.    your hard drive.

  55. 2. Run DOSSIG.EXE to extract the update signature file, VIRSIGS.CPS, and 
  56.    the Read Me file, DOSSIG.TXT, which contains this file and an updated 
  57.    list of virus signatures included in the VIRSIGS.CPS file.

  59. 3. Copy the VIRSIGS.CPS file to the directory on your hard disk containing 
  60.    the PC Tools VDEFEND file (normally the PCTOOLS directory).
  61.   
  62. 4. Reboot your computer to invoke the new signatures when you run VDEFEND.  
  63.    Look for the message "XXX external signatures were read," which should
  64.    appear after the VDEFEND box, with XXX being the number of new signatures
  65.    added, if the signature file was properly extracted and copied to the
  66.    correct directory.

  69. There are some virus signatures included in the VIRSIGS.CPS file that have
  70. the same name as viruses already detected by VDEFEND. As new variants of
  71. viruses are found, we may add the variant signature to the signature file
  72. to increase the virus detection capability. The signatures are handled 
  73. internally, and the user cannot see a virus list. This may cause the number 
  74. of external signatures listed to differ from the actual number of signatures 
  75. added.
